Revolution: Christmas 2011

A blog about all things Christmas...
But especially about starting a
Christmas Revolution!
A Christmas without all the binge spending and commercialism.
A return to a simpler time.
A united effort in focusing on the needs of others.
A purer celebrating our Savior's birth.
Join us:)

I've been thinking about this for years and I finally decided I am going to do it! I am going to fight back against the hyper-commercialism that has invaded Christmas and that is breaking it down and tearing it apart! I mean I know that Christmas is supposed to be about the birth of Christ and not the presents and yet I still have found it so hard to blend the two. I don't know about you, it just seems that presents get in the way too much of the time. As much as I don't want to admit it worrying so much about presents distracts me from the true meaning of Christmas and takes away from the beauty and peace that can be mine if I am just willing to let go of the way the world has taught us to celebrate one of the most important events of all time: The birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.

And so it is my pledge to change the way I observe this most important day and time of year. To seek the Spirit of God in doing so. To not judge others but to encourage those who are seeking to change the way they celebrate Christmas. If you are feeling it too, maybe it's time to make a change!

I have so many thoughts on this. So many things to share. I encourage you to share your stories and experiences also. Let's join together and start a revolution! One which can affect generations to come. Let's free ourselves of the commercialism of Christmas and free our spirits to better serve our God, celebrate His birth and fill our souls with light and love!

Christmas 2011 is going to be an amazing season!

  1. I am loving this.... We are so soul sisters. its kinda crazy.... So What are we going to do ..... I think a big hurdle to get over is gift guilt with the kids. I have such fond memories of christmas... and a lot of those memories surrounds the excitements of girts under the tree. Thinking of new traditions that bring fond memories, that don't have to do with girts under the tree......

    1. Take the kids somewhere where they can serve less fortunate.
    2. Fun games with the family (only for christmas)
    3. Fun ways to bring christs birth into play.... Live nativity...
    4. walk temple grounds.
    5. caroling.
    6. SNOW , sledding
    7. Family slumber party.
    8. Every family member thinks of a gift to give to the savior. Think of fun ways to give to jesus. (put into candles and burn them, put in balloons and send them to him, flouting lanterns....

OK lets do this! TALK ABOUT IT!

  2. I haven't thought much of what to replace the gifts with. But I hear you on gift guilt I know I might be feeling that, I'm sure I will. I think you would be a great help to me on coming up with ideas on what to surround myself with in place of gifts. Mostly, I am just an idea and principle thinker and not a practical doer. I need help with that. I know why I want to change but not necessarily how... trusting in myself to follow the spirit on this quest and do the right thing for my family during Christmas. And honestly, there are others who want to change the way they celebrate Christmas I hope this blog can encourage them!

All I know I want to do is:
    a. Do service projects on a daily or weekly basis
    b. Not talk about gifts or lists and such
    c. Focus only on the Savior (Santa Claus is a cool dude but a distraction... But if they kids see him as a representation of Christmas then I have to include him and have him help me point them in the right direction;) They'll grow out of Santa before too long. And if I don't bring him up then maybe sooner than later....

I love your ideas so far by they way!!!

  3. We tried to teach the kids about the real St Nick last year and told them Santa wasn't real and st Nick was someone who just wanted the people he helped to be thankful to heavenly father...and he just helped people in need. Somehow, even with all this explanation....Joshua went on talking about Santa and we just tried to keep redirecting. I guess we'll see how it all goes this year--Jayden is VERY gift and getting minded though so that could make for an extra challenge. My sister and her husband plan to only have gifts in their family every other year and the years in between take a sub-4-santa family. That's a very nice idea....still very gift oriented but a lot of times those people just need some needs provided for (like coats for their kids, etc.) and the people gifting can be like St Nick....helping them to serve God.

Last year in a talk I heard someone mention walking into someone's home during the Christmas season and just seeing nativities and pictures of Christ EVERYWHERE--so much that the true meaning of Christmas could not be lost or forgotten in their home. I like that idea.
