I'm Thankful For...
Instead of a having the kids write out a Christmas Wish List for Santa this year and mailing it off to the North Pole, my husband and I, have decided that on Thanksgiving, or sometime around then, we will help each member of the family write a Thankful List. Because this will be replacing the Christmas Wish List, I want to make it as big as a deal as possible.
Some ideas will be to make it big, colorful, full of glitter and stickers and anything else that might make it beautiful. Maybe we can even print out pictures of each item so that it doesn't lose its meaning when they can't remember the words they wrote down or had us write out. And then we want to post it where they all can see it for the next month or so until Christmas. Can we just keep it up all year round?? ;)
The hope in doing this is that if (when) the kids start to get the "what do I want for Christmas" buzz and can't think of anything other than what they want to get we will be able to help them see what they already have. And that even if they don't get anything for Christmas they are still so richly blessed.
I honestly don't know how they kids will react when we tell them there may not be many gifts for Christmas. I'm still deciding on that one, which I will write about later for sure... But my hope is that this year will be the first of many Christmas Seasons where the focus won't be on the getting but purely on the giving and just being grateful for what the Lord has already blessed us with:)

Here is a nice quote from a site I just found:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.worldchangers.org/monthly_the_spirit_of_christmas.aspx
"This Christmas, I want to challenge you to focus on someone else and purpose to be a blessing to them, just like Jesus was and is, to us. Make a list of all the people you know and ask the Lord to show you what you can do to make their lives more joyous. Find out what and how God wants you to give so He can demonstrate His love to someone through you. This is the true meaning of Christmas.< "
Success in changing the children's primary focus to being Christ's hands at Christmas time, as a gift back to him, would be amazing.
